GYNECOMASTIA

Gynecomastia means breast growth that referring to the over development of man's breast and the over projection of the nipple and areola.

A condition can be seen in with regards to half of grown-up men. It can affect only one breast or both.   Gynecomastia  may cause aesthetic problems and also cause psychological problem that reduce the quality of life of the person such as feeling unassured by what they describe as “female-like” breasts. In young and adult men, uncomfortable feelings like shame and hesitation may occur during physical activities such as swimming and doing sports. When a boy enters pubescence or an older man's body produces less testosterone, the balance of these hormones shifts. For this situation, a higher level of estrogen causes growth in male breast tissue.

In spite of the fact, doing sports can help reduce the problem of gynecomastia, it isn't totally relieved.  It is almost impossible to dissolve the breast tissue that creates gynecomastia with sports. The best solution at this stage is doing exercises that will work the chest muscle, and to remove the remaining fat tissue with liposuction. Although gynecomastia pills may have some impact on excess fat, it has no effect on breast tissue which is the fundamental cause of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia Procedure

Gynecomastia operation is a body shaping operation that aims to have healthy, sporty breasts and is applied to eliminate the fat, growth, sagging and cracking in this area. The treatment for breast enlargement varies according to age, health status, how long the complaint has existed, and the patient's response to previous treatments.

Before planning operation, It is expected that the patients should have a stable body weight, and if there is a  high weight problem, they should reach their ideal weight, then plan the operation, have realistic information about the results of the surgery, and be motivated to change their appearance.

Depending on each patient’s unique condition, the physician may recommend Liposuction (removal of excess breast fat) ,Mastectomy-Excision (pigmented skin area surrounding nipple) or combination of both techniques methods for patients.

If your enlarged breasts contain excessive fatty tissue, surgeons may use Laser Liposuction. Liposuction can easily remove excess fat in the chest region. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause, surgical excision- Mastectomy- may be necessary. In addition, Mastectomy can be applied if the areola (the dark circle around the nipple) is to be reduced or if the nipple is to be put into a more natural form.Mastectomy surgery excisions are generally very small and are placed in hidden locations so scars are merely visible.

Mastectomy operation takes 2-4 hours on average. The average hospital stay is 1 day. Operation will be performed under general anesthesia, the patient will not feel any pain.

Points to Take Consideration Before Gynecomastia Operation:

  • Until two weeks before the operation, the patient is not to be exposed to the sun for a long time in order to avoid sunburn and permanent scars.
  • If any illness has been experienced one week before the date of surgery, the doctor should be informed.
  • Smoking should be stopped at least 3 weeks and alcohol use should be stopped up to 48 hours before the operation.
  • Consumption of food and drink should be stopped at least 5 hours before the operation.
  • It should be ensured that aspirin, aspirin derivatives and drugs that increase the risk of bleeding are not taken at least 10 days before the operation.

Post-Operation

You may experience  a little bit pain, swelling and bruising in your breasts for several weeks after breast reduction surgery. After the operation, the patient should lie flat for 3 days and should not take a shower. You will need to wear an elastic compression garment day and night for 3 weeks. This corset helps reduce edema and swelling in your chest while you are healing. After 1-2 weeks, your stitches will melt or be removed by the doctor. You should avoid stretching, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about 3 weeks after the surgery. It will take about 6 weeks for you to fully return to your daily activities. It may take up to 6 months for you to see the full results of the operation.

It is not possible for the gynecomastia problem to recur after the operation. However, if there are conditions such as cirrhosis, liver disease, hormone disorders, drug and alcohol use, the breast may grow a little  because some fat tissue should be left in the surgery. In case of excess weight gain, there may be some growth in adipose tissue.
