GUM CONTOURING

Everyone's gum line is different. Some may be high, low, intermittent, or even irregular. Gum contouring is a method that reshapes your gumline. Gum Shaping makes your smile line look more equal and symmetrical.

An uneven gum line can hide an important part of a healthy tooth. A simple gum treatment can change your entire smile.

Gum Contouring Procedure

Gum shaping is the process of cutting or removing excess gum texture around the teeth. If you have gum recession, the technique involves renovating the gum tissue. In most cases, gingival reshaping is a preferential procedure. Instead it is done to improve gums, teeth or smile.

If you have periodontal disorder, gum shaping may be a solution. This is a method where there is antibiotics to destroy bacteria and infection, or a dental cleaning to improve gum health.

If these procedures do not work, a cure such as pocket reduction surgery on the gums and surrounding bone may be recommended to save the tooth. Local anesthesia is used to numb the gingival area. A soft tissue laser or scalpel is used to expose more of the tooth and reshape the gingival line. Sutures can be used to keep the gingival texture intact.

If your gingival are receding and the technique involves adding gingival tissue, tissue will be removed from another part of your mouth, perhaps your palate. This tissue is put around your teeth to lengthen and reconstruct your gingival line. In Orenda Health, gingival shaping usually takes about 1 to 2 hours with well-supported physicians and team.

FAQ

Gum contouring involves little downtime, but complete healing might take one week to ten days, depending on the extent of the surgery. A little discomfort and pain may be expected immediately after the procedure and should be expected to last a few days. You may have to limit some activities for a day or two based on how you feel and any tenderness you may have.

Your gums will not grow back after gum contouring surgery. The bone under the gums is contoured along with the gum, so it doesnt allow the gums to grow back.To avoid gum regrowth, we will ensure your gums are about 3mm away from the bone. This distance is determined based on their Biological Width. Also, bone sounding, where we probe the gum tissue to check the underlying bone level, helps us ensure that you are a good candidate for the procedure. X-rays provide further insight, and we can remove bone as required. This can help reduce the risk of gum relapse.

Generally, gum contouring is considered to be an extremely safe procedure. A local anaesthetic is used to keep you comfortable during the procedure. A minimal number of people may have an allergic reaction to the local anaesthetics being used. There is also always a chance of infection, especially if you do not follow aftercare instructions. While gum tissue relapse is also a possibility, it does not pose a health risk. As mentioned, with a proper diagnosis, we can avoid relapse.
