Due to various factors such as hormonal, genetic, after gaining weight, because of tumors or result of old age, breasts can get larger and become droopier and can cause several discomforts, such as crooked neck, pain in the shoulders, hunching, leaning forward, numbness towards the arms, back pain, rash on the skin under the breasts etc.
Breast reduction surgery can be done on both female and male patients who are not comfortable with the way the overly large size of the breasts look and feel. The symptoms from the size and the droopy shape of the large breasts can be alleviated by reducing the size of the breasts. It is achieved by removing the excess breast tissue, fat tissue and extra skin to form a comfortable and pleasing appearance and to have a healthier function of the vertebra by getting rid of the heavy weight of the breasts.
Breast reduction on Men (Gynecomastia)
Due to hormonal, medicational, weight gain, consumption of alcohol, genetic reasons, some tumors etc. breasts can get larger on men, too. The enlargement can affect one breast, or both. Can be a symptom of some tumors or infections, or can be just accumulation of excess fat on the breasts. There are different types of gynecomastia operations, which you can read here in more detail.
Breast Reduction on Women
Since the breasts are not internal organs inside the body, the procedure is a fairly easy and fast-healing process when it comes to breast reduction surgeries. The assessment of the operation will be done by the surgeon before the procedure and the best option for the patient will be chosen. Some reasons for the patients of breast reduction surgery are listed below:
If the patient has excess fat and tissue around the breast area stretching towards the back and creating skin folds, the breast reduction surgery can be combined with liposuction on the upper or lower back to eliminate the folding skin and excess fat, so that the results of the surgery can be more aesthetically pleasing and physically more comfortable.
Recovery after Breast Reduction
The surgeon will instruct you with the necessary steps to be taken after the surgery, and you should follow them to safely achieve the results you want. Due to the operation, swelling will occur on the affected site and drainage tubes will be placed right after the surgery to eliminate the excess fluids. The drainage tubes will be removed after a day. Before leaving the hospital, a surgical bra will be fitted on your breasts to help keep the shape and make the healing faster. It is recommended to keep the surgical bra at least for 2 weeks after the surgery. The bra will help healing faster, and prevent swelling and edema. It is expected to encounter bruising and tenderness on the affected areas, which will be gone during the recovery period.

Due to the incisions on the breasts, under the nipple going down towards the underside of the breasts, there will be operation marks. According to patients’ skin type, the marks may be very thin, or thicker and red. With proper care and right treatment such as fraction laser or radiofrequency treatment, the marks may be invisible in 1-2 years. The final shape of the breasts will be visible in between 6 months to a year.
In the early weeks after the surgery, it is recommended to keep away from physical exercise, or any other activity that can strain or move the breasts excessively, especially running. Lifting heavy weights should also be avoided. After stopping the usage of the surgical bra, the bras that can support the breasts, such as sports bras or any other supporting bras that don’t have underwiring that the doctors recommend, can be worn again. If your job does not involve active physical effort, you can start working again in 7-10 days.
